Biographical Information
Esther Craig (ca. 1745-1812) married George Scatterday (ca.1734-1768) in 1765. After George's death in 1768, Esther married Lewis Reece (before 1742-1802/03). Esther brought with her to this marriage two children, Aaron (1765-ca.1795) and John (1766- 1844). Esther and Lewis had two children, David (ca.1770-1830) and Mary (Polly) born about 1770.
When Lewis died, his estate was divided between Esther, David, and Mary; David, according to laws of primogeniture, inherited the plantation which consisted of 100 acres and 3/4 acres located in western Loudoun County. David never married, had no children, and died intestate, leaving the courts to determine the legitimate heir(s) to his land.
Scope and Content
These documents were found in a wooden box near a log house south of Hillsboro, Virginia. This is thought to have been the home of Ann Matilda Beatty Scatterday (28 Feb 1814-28 Jul 1893), the wife of Aaron Scatterday, Jr. (1 Mar 1795-6 Mar 1872). The dates of the papers are 1848-1877, with most dated 1849.
Most of the letters and sworn statements in this collection relate to the legal process of establishing legitimate heirs of David Reece, especially seeking to determine the claim of heirs of Aaron Scatterday, Jr. to share in the estate.
