Historical Information
In 1869, Virginia adopted a new state constitution at the constitutional convention headed by John C. Underwood (1840-1913). Commonly referred to as the Underwood constitution, it provided for universal suffrage, public schools and the division of counties into townships (modified as magisterial districts). Broad Run Magisterial District represented the portion of Loudoun County east of Leesburg. It had three precincts: Guilford, Farmwell, and Gum Spring.
The 1877 Virginia state election for state officials and members of legislature took place on Tuesday 6 November. Judges for the election in Loudoun County's District No.10 Guilford Precinct were Newton Keene (1804-1880) G.W.F. Hummer (1823-1917) Samuel E. Lent (1822-1880). There were also two clerks: Thomas F. Sexton (1848-1920) and F. Converse Bridges (1847-1900). Guilford Precinct recorded 61 certified votes.
Frederick W.M. Holiday (1828-1899) ran for governor, James A. Walker (1832-1901) for lieutenant governor, and James G. Fields (1826-1901) for attorney general. The three candidates ran unopposed and won all 61 votes at Guilford Precinct. There were also four candidates for two seats in the House of Delegates: Cooke D. Luckett (1841-1913), William Matthew (fl. 1869-1880), Charles P. McCabe (1830-1898), and John R. Carter (fl. 1846-1847). Luckett received 42 votes, Matthew 41, McCabe 21, and Carter 12. However, McCabe and Carter won the seats in the statewide vote.
Scope and Content
The collection consists of the original poll book for the 1877 Virginia state election in Guilford Precinct which includes the names, signatures, and certification of each judge and clerk. Election turnout and the number of votes for each candidate is noted in the Certificate of Judges. The poll book also includes the names of voters.
