Plants entered the Virginia Military Institute in September 1904 and resigned in March 1906. He immediately accepted the position of bookkeeper at First National Bank of Seymour, Texas. He spent his entire career at that institution, serving as president and chairman of the board, and was active in civic affairs. Plants married Verda Kenan of Seymour on February 8, 1911.
