Biographical Information

The son of Elbert S. Trinkle, E. Lee Trinkle, whose full name was Elbert Lee Trinkle, was born in Wytheville, Virginia on 12 March 1876. he graduated from Hampden-Sydney College and the University of Virginia Law School and practiced law in his hometown for over twenty-three years. Trinkle twice served in the Virginia State Senate before his election as Governor of Virginia (1922-1926). Trinkle moved to Roanoke, Virginia after his gubernatorial term, serving as president of Shenandoah Life Insurance Company. He suffered a heart attack and died on 25 November 1939 and is buried in East End Cemetery in Wytheville.

Trinkle married Helen Ball Sexton of Houston, Texas on 10 February 1914; they had four children including E. Lee Trinkle Jr., Helen Sue Trinkle, William S. Trinkle, and James Trinkle

Scope and Content

This colelction consists of four items including an printed envelope with Trinkle's photograph addressed to Sanders Bunts, advertisting Trinkle's 1916 congressional campaign. A card issued to G. R. Perkins for membership in the Wilson-Trinkle Club also was part of Trinkle's 1916 campaign ephemera.

Two letters complete the collection. A letter from E. Lee Trinkle to Thomas Wohlford and Joseph C. Shaffer, dated 7 December 1926, discusses payment for tax tickets against Shaffer, Wohlford & Trinkle in Wythe County. Another letter from E. Lee Trinkle to "Whom It May Concern" dated 7 December 1926 provides a recommendation for Robert Songer.
